The earliest I remember showing interest in fashion was when I watched my dad hemming his own pants at the kitchen table. I wanted to learn how to use the sewing machine. Since then, I’ve always loved being creative and hands on. I attended the High School of Fashion Industries, where I started my fashion design career, and was eventually accepted into FIT—my dream school! I discovered my specialization–knitwear–while studying abroad at the Politecnico di Milano in Italy. What really interested me in knitwear is that there are no limitations. You can create a simple silhouette, yet use interesting yarn and stitches to create texture and a new look and feel within that. You are essentially both a fashion and textiles designer, which was a new challenge.

My design journey began by exploring how clothing influences how women feel about their own beauty. Intimate Apparel not only transforms a woman visually, but also gives her the confidence to tackle the world’s challenges. My designs seek to mirror the delicacy and sensuality of a women’s body, while simulating geometric proportionality. I use fashion as a medium of artistic expression, and to transform a woman both internally and externally. My passion has led me from Texas to New York, where I’ve had the honor of attending FIT and participating in the Intimate Apparel Specialization. I received a very generous scholarship from the SAIG committee and won first prize in the Femmy Design Contest 2015. FIT has allowed me to explore and grow as a designer, and prepared me to work in the fashion industry.

Even from a very young age I can remember marching to the beat of my own drum. Well, it was more like strutting! Everything fascinated me as a child. The world was this foreign land and I had to explore and taste everything. As a result, I was always running away from my mother’s tight hand. I would even run to the appliance section at department stores just to see how the gadgets were constructed, and functioned. I always appreciated beautiful construction. As a designer, I still use my fascination with the world for inspiration, while paying close attention to detail in construction to execute my garments to perfection!

I am an artist. I use the dress form as my easel. Coming from a fine arts education, living in the hood, I have an innate sense of resourcefulness. This equips me with a novel approach to design and a unique assessment on what defines fashion. No matter what medium or material, I am continuously inspired to translate my work into luxury finish. I am inspired by global awareness, craftsmanship, intensive details, contemporary art, and the dichotomy of youth culture with the classics. “If there’s a book you really want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it,” Toni Morrison once said. This is why I design. With each sketch, each muse, each collection I am writing my story. I am a light and I hope my actions will inspire others to go after their unwritten dreams.

Children’s wear design to me is a balance between creativity and logical thinking. I believe that in order to have a successful collection you need a balance. I chose this specialization because of my ability to create practical, innovative designs for kids. I want to create functional, aesthetically pleasing, and unique designs. My time at FIT has strengthened my skills and helped me turn my aspirations into a reality. I am thankful for the opportunities I have been given and for those who have helped me along the way. I couldn’t have done it without you!
