2010 Judges

Kate Betts is a contributing editor at Time magazine. Previously, Betts was the editor-in-chief
Time Style and Design, a quarterly supplement to Time, and editor-in-chief of Harper’s
Bazaar, where she completely redesigned the 134-year-old fashion title. She moved
to Bazaar from Vogue, where she served as fashion news director from 1991 to 1999.
Recently named one of the top 10 fashion editors by Forbes, Betts was also the subject
of a Lifetime documentary, Putting Baby to Bed: Wife, Mother, and Editor in Chief,
about her experience as the youngest editor ever to take over a fashion magazine.
Betts is the author of the forthcoming book Michelle Obama: The Power of Style, due
out from Clarkson Potter.

Elisa Palomino launched her eponymous label during New York Fashion Week this past
February. Prior to becoming vice president of design at Diane von Furstenberg, she
was studio director at Roberto Cavalli, worked with the “petits mains” at the Dior
Haute Couture Ateliers, was head of the studio at John Galliano, and designed Moschino’s
Cheap & Chic collection. Born and raised in Spain, Palomino attended St. Martins College
of Art and completed a Masters degree in fashion design.

Cathleen Sheehan brings diverse experience in the retail, apparel, fragrance, and
beauty industries to her role at ESP Trendlab. ESP Trendlab is a trend research +
consulting agency, located in New York City that detects and analyzes cutting-edge
design trends for over 1000 leadership brands worldwide. Prior to joining ESP, Sheehan
held positions at Escada, Badgley Mischka, and Cerruti, where she worked directly
with the chairman of the board and top management leading strategic initiatives in
marketing, sales, production, finance, and operations. Sheehan was voted “Best Dressed”
at the Harvard Business School, where she also earned an MBA.

Lisa Smilor is associate executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of
America (CFDA). For more than 20 years, Smilor has been the industry’s “cheerleader”
for hundreds of fashion students and emerging designers, and is actively involved
with the fashion departments at the country’s leading design colleges and universities.
Smilor was involved in the development of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund and sits on
the Fund’s Selection Committee. Most recently, she worked with Mayor Bloomberg’s office
to create the {CFDA Fashion Incubator}, a program to help emerging designer brands
grow their businesses with the support of business mentoring.
