Equus

Photo of a girl with a fierce and intense gaze, crouched down on the ground. She is wearing a gray vest that appears to be saddle-like, accentuated with a high, curved back that gives it a sculptural quality. The vest is adorned with straps, snaps, and pocket details and is paired with a sheer power mesh black bodysuit with long, fitted sleeves. The trousers are glossy black, flaring out from the knee and trailing on the ground, with detachable flowy dark mane trimming.

A photograph of a girl striking a confident, slightly twisted pose. She is clad in a gray structured vest featuring a high, sculptural back reminiscent of saddle, utility pockets, and strap fastenings. Underneath is a sheer, fitted black bodysuit with a high neckline that allows the torso's silhouette to show through. Shiny vinyl black pants have foil-printed horseshoe details and detachable hair trimmings. Accessorizing the look is a braided belt.

The model is captured from the back, offering a clear view of the detailed, sculptural back piece of the vest, which curves outward and is characterized by its circular design and horizontal ridges. The saddle-shaped vest is constructed with boning inside, covered with frayed edge cotton wax straps. The zipper is installed at the center back of the saddle vest, so the vest can function as a backpack as well.

The model holds a distinctive accessory—a horse-head handbag. It is intricately designed and constructed with pronounced features and a mane that seems to cascade down from its head. She is wearing a black vinyl puffer with quilted midriff and sleeves that transition to a stretchy, more fitted knit material at the forearm. Paired with the jacket is a long, ox-blood denim skirt.

The model gazes upward with a contemplative expression. She is holding the handle of a horse-head handbag, which is made with real hair and horse bit hardware connecting to the bridle handle. She wears a black velvet-like vinyl puffer jacket with a quilted midriff cropped just above the waist, and a long, ox-blood denim skirt with screen printed burnout designs that cascade down the sides in a symmetrical fashion.

Inspired by Peter Shaffer’s play Equus, my thesis traverses the profound paradox of liberation entwined with control, as exemplified by the emblematic figure of the horse. At the core of my thesis lies the silhouette of the horse saddle, a point of connection between human and steed, yet an apparatus of control. By transposing the saddle’s form onto the human body, the design spurs a dialogue about the inherent tension between instinctive wildness and imposed discipline.
