The Knight's Journey

Five-year-old smiling child making peace signs and wearing a mockneck burgundy smock with gold ties at the side and a drawbridge pocket opened to show a painting of a red heart with knights guarding it and purple curtains framing it. Below the pocket is a needle-felted appliqué of water with gold embroidery, and above the pocket there are gold-embroidered rays of light. Beneath the smock the model is wearing a cream pintucked puff-sleeve blouse with gray and purple puppet sleeves.

This look is meant to be played with like a pop-up book. The pant cuffs reveal hidden characters!

Five-year-old child looking off to the side, reaching out one arm and crossing her legs, standing. She is wearing a mockneck burgundy smock with gold ties at the side and a drawbridge pocket opened to show a painting of a red heart with knights guarding it and purple curtains framing it. Below the pocket is a needle-felted appliqué of water with gold embroidery, and above the pocket there are gold-embroidered rays of light. Beneath the smock the model is wearing a cream pintucked puff sleeve.

This look was created using goldwork hand embroidery, needle-felting, quilting, and fabric painting.

Eight-year-old child smiling while playing with green dragon puppet sleeves attached to a chenille jacquard and gray microsuede coat, with a detachable needle-felted character hanging off. The coat is styled open to reveal a blue T-shirt and burgundy diamond pintucked petti-bloomers with equestrian spats function over the foot.

This gender-neutral look features pin-tucking, crenellation sleeve wings, and dragon puppet sleeves.

Eight-year-old child smiling, facing slightly to the side, while playing with green dragon puppet sleeves attached to a chenille jacquard and gray microsuede coat, with a detachable needle-felted character hanging off. The coat is styled open to reveal a blue T-shirt and burgundy diamond pintucked petti-bloomers with equestrian spats function over the foot.

The satin pants are inspired by 17th century petticoat breeches, spatter-dashes, and bloomers.

Detail shot of two needle-felted toy character charms hanging off of chenille floral coat with spiked dragon sleeve. One charm is a mint-colored character dressed as a king with a cape, crown, and scepter. The other charm is a four-legged gold creature with heads on either end of its body shaped like hearts (one blue, one red) and wearing a white lace saddle.

The coat features my needle-felted detachable toy characters, "King Pio" and "The Creature."

These two gender-neutral haute couture children's wear looks take inspiration from pop-up books, fairy tales, maximalism, and medieval art and fashion. They tell the story of a child going on an adventure of self-discovery and what it means to explore and come to understand the world around you. The pieces are meant to be a child's ultimate fantasy, with sleeves that function as puppets to play pretend, plush toy accessories, and a pocket that opens to reveal a hidden world.
