Living Sculpture: Examining Our Own Creature-Hood

Two women standing center in the photo. The woman to the left has dark hair and wears a long black wool coat draped over her shoulders, over slouchy beige waffle knit long underwear; and on top, a black sheer corset under a latex-style tank top with button closures down the front. The second woman to the right has light pink hair and wears a long tone-on-tone neutral beige dress with a drop waist and a handkerchief hem. The dress is made of silk charmeuse, a crinkle chiffon, and the body is silk

Image is of a woman centered in the photo. She wears a long dress with a dropped waist and handkerchief hem and halter neck. On top of the dress, there is a large triangular-shaped swatch of a brown leather-like bio-textile developed from the culture of kombucha and then hand punched and sewn together. At her neck, the swatch connects to a handcrafted metal choker that secures the accessory to the body.

Living Sculpture, inspired by Donna Haraway's essay A Cyborg Manifesto, is a collection that explores fragmented identities. Drawing historical silhouette inspiration from industrialization, circa the late 1800s, this collection reflects both my urban upbringing in the American Midwest and the dialogue between nature, technology, and human. Harvesting bio-textiles from kombucha cultures, latex fabrics, and up-cycled furs, I explore how fashion represents multifaceted identities, blending craft with sustainable design.
