Utkarsh Shukla
Utkarsh Shukla is a fashion designer from India, currently residing and working in New York City. Having moved around the world many times throughout his life, his design ethos and aesthetic values in fashion are heavily influenced by his outlook on the cultural clashes that influenced his understanding of being Indian.
He explores the relationship between the personal and cultural identity through an array of multidisciplinary practices, speaking to and examining the concept of multicultural identity. Shukla graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Fashion Design from New York's prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology and was in the first cohort of this creative program at the school. His collection closed the MFA runway show at New York Fashion Week. Previously, he graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi, with a bachelor's in fashion design, winning the most innovative graduate collection award. He also has an associate's degree from FIT. While working and creating in India, Shukla focused on working with local artisans and craftspeople, specifically with the Benaras/Varanasi weaving community, to create a new vernacular for the century-old art of brocade weaving.
