Here’s a little taste of my looks at the show!
This was one of the best days of my entire life. I have to just say the stylists were BEYOND great this year. FIT set up the great hall so perfectly and having the chance to share my work with my family was the most incredible feeling. After it all happened though I really truly wished that every student got a chance to be a part of it, even more than I wished it before. It was the most exciting thing, and is something I will remember forever.
Congrats everyone… It was super impressive.
More photos to come!
From my model fitting… so fun. =)
First I want to start off by saying CONGRATULATIONS to everyyoneeee! Regardless of if you were selected to be in the show or not, you all blew me away with the work in the great hall. And we are finally done!!
The day of set up… was in fact chaos, but it was the most aesthetically pleasing chaos that exists I’m pretty sure. I unfortunately didn’t get pictures of it all… but let me paint you a picture…
Basically the great hall at FIT is a huge room… the size of your average gymnasium. The room was completely filled with, first off with the nicest dress forms ever, which were each dressed with our BFA and Cotton garments. Knitwear, Sportswear, Special Occasion, Children’s Wear, and Intimates were all in the hall. The level of talent that this school cranks out is absolutely unreal. These garments were the most exquisite things I have ever seen. It was truly a sight to see.
I fortunately had both of garments selected to be in the fashion show…
…there they are! I am really proud of myself, which is the most amazing feeling in the world. Now onto model fittings and such!
I am a purely inspiration driven kinda lady. My sketchbook is my most prized possession… it is me, in book form.
So here is a little look inside of my head! The two first images show where my collection inspiration is rooted from. A dark twisty forest, some Bosh lovin’, old pages from my favorite 1950s folklore book, and a sort of magical essence. Then I took a turn with it… that lead me to an underwater, grim yet beautiful scene that still really encapsulates the surrealism that I started with. The colors of my collection are mainly purple, gray, and charcoal… this was a new thing for me, super out of my element. I had tendency in the past to stick to neutrals- safe and classic… but I felt as if for collection I should stay true to what my brain was doing, be true to myself as a designer, and roll with it.
All and all I’m glad I did. It’s safe to say I do not want to knit another purple garment for… a very long time (100% because I’ve been looking at it for so long)… but I’m so far beyond happy with the way it all turned out. Knitting love.

As time flies by, we find ourselves inching very close to our due date!
Now this time in the semester is one of the most chaotic situations you will ever witness. Being in fashion design is, for all intensive purposes, being an artist. This is our art form… so once our “visions” start to come together every little bit of us is literally on the very edge of explosion for weeks. The final touches and decisions can make your piece beautiful or absolutely destroy it… talk about staring pressure in the face.
When you put some odd 40(?) knitters in a lab together who are all under that amount of pressure… things get reallll’ crazy. Crazy good and crazy bad… but I will honestly say… It has a way of really bringing out the most amazing things in you. As a student you get to hear your classmates speak about their collections, why they want it to look the way it does, and you clearly can see and actually feel the huge connection the person has to their garments. For me I think its the most incredible thing because its what unites us, our common insane amount of love for what we do.
You see fashion is sometimes misconstrued. People who do not know a lot about our industry can write it off as being materialist, fake, and good ol’ stupid. But at FIT, in New York, and a handful of other places, it is the complete opposite of the that. Its the way you express yourself completely, and serves as what draws you to this world. It is everything that we love, as much as people can complain or cry in the next weeks, I know at least for the most part that not one of us would change our life. This is the career we want, the life we want, and as painful as it can be we love it with every bone in our little bodies.
So there we go! I had to pop a little pep talk into this post today. Its been a rough few weeks for many, and it will be a rough few more… so if you guys are reading this and your freakin’ out… smile, and get off the computer and go knit or sew, come onnn (joking) !!! It will all be super awesome at the end… and lets be real here, we are amazing (and know it), and we will ALL go so far in this world regardless of the outcome of the fashion show.
Your alllll talented and amazing! It’ssss true.
