Growing up, I spent a lot of time trying to erase my identity by chemically processing and straightening my hair. Years ago, I cut all of my hair off, started over, and began relearning my hair. I want to reject the embarrassment I once had for my hair and highlight its uniqueness. In my pieces, I used traditional African hair practices, such as weaving and hair wrapping, and applied it to fabric. I want to celebrate my personal progress and growth, and dedicate this as a love letter to myself.
