Madras meets NYC

This is the front view of the brocade vest with the brocade and wool suiting gathered skirt. The blue piping details on top of the gathers in the skirt, as well as in the seams of the vest, are very visible here. The big gold buttons give the vest dimension, complimenting the gold from the brocade. The most prominent detail is the brocade on the skirt, giving a fluid look as if it's flowing down the solid skirt. Finally, the drapey chiffon sleeves bring the look together.

This close up shot of the waist of the skirt shows the contrast binding between the waist yoke and the gather skirt, giving the skirt more dimension. The pattern of the brocade is also more defined, allowing the richness and elegance of the fabric to shine through.

Growing up in New Jersey after moving from India, I felt so out of place. Others made fun of my clothes and my culture, causing me to be ashamed and hide parts of myself in order to fit in. But as I grew up, I started to understand just how beautiful South Indian culture really was and I learned to embrace who I really am. My thesis is a reflection of who I am today. I wanted to combine my South Indian roots that made me who I am, with  my life in New Jersey and attending college in New York City,  these contributed to how I was shaped by western culture. For the longest time I thought I had to be one or the other, but my thesis is a display of who I truly am, both South Indian and American.
