El Clavel

El Clavel is inspired by different aspects of my grandmother’s life: her sense of style, her femininity, and the vibrant garden that she tended to so carefully. This collection is focused on creating elevated, timeless looks that adorn the body. I created a delicate carnation motif in collaboration with my friend @margaretjoyart.

The side view of the garment showcases the silhouette and many layers of the look. The carnation print flows on the hem of the top, which leads the eyes to the details of the apron trimmed with ruffles and the loose-fitting pants draping down the legs.

The carnation motif is printed on lightweight silk twill, which drapes elegantly with the gathered silk tulle.

In designing the silhouette of this look, I paid special homage to my Nicaraguan family. The women who raised me were never seen without their aprons: they symbolized their hard work and their restlessness. I wanted to take this staple - which is never associated with special occasions - and place it in a contemporary setting, where its only role is to elevate the silhouette.

Front view of the garment shows the layered “apron” skirt, pants, cord trim belt, and top.

Getting ready for Sunday mass was the only time when my hardworking grandmother properly indulged herself. With dainty details, trims, and tassels tied around the waist, this look has a sense of decadence that embodies the "Sunday Best" tradition.
